Prof. Dr. Ernst-Robert Grawitz (Berlin June 8, 1899 - April 24, 1945) was Reichsphysician SS and Police in the Third Reich. It was he who advised Himmler on the use of gas chambers. He carried out brutal medical experiments on Nazi concentration camp prisoners and due to his SS rank he was administratively responsible for all medical experiments conducted. At the end of World War II he was a physician in Hitler's Bunker in Berlin. When he heard that other officials were leaving the capital of the Reich in order to escape from advancing Russian armies, he petitioned Hitler to allow him to leave. His request was denied, and he decided to kill himself along with his family. While eating supper with his wife and two children he pulled the pins out of two grenades he held under the table and blew up his family and himself. This dramatic suicide is depicted in the 2004 movie Der Untergang, where Grawitz is portrayed by Christian Hoening.
