Hanns Heinz Ewers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (644 words)
That same year he collaborated with Ernst von Wolzogen in forming a literary vaudeville theatre before forming his own such company, which toured Central and Eastern Europe before the expenses of operation and constant interference from censors forced him to abandon the enterprise.
A world traveller, Ewers was in South America at the outbreak of World War I, and relocated to the United States, where he was interned upon the American entry into the war in 1917.
The novel was adapted several times to the cinematic screen, most recently by Erich von Stroheim in 1952.
Pierrot Lunaire: The Melodramas (343 words)
The German cabaret movement was launched in 1901 in Berlin by Baron Ernst von Wolzogen (1855-1934), a writer of modest talents known more for his organizational skills than his artistic ability.
It is likely that Wolzogen's Überbrettl suggested the Übermensch, or "Superman," conceived of by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), whom Wolzogen admired greatly.
Wolzogen did not choose the Überbrettl's original 650-seat theater merely for reasons of expediency or availability.
