Erquelinnes (Municipality, Province of Hainaut, Belgium) (370 words)
The municipality of Erquelinnes (9,636 inhabitants in 1994; 4,423 ha) is located 13 km north-east of Maubeuge on the river Sambre, and separated from the French town of Jeumont by the border.
The population of Erquelinnes increased from 550 inhabitants in 1850 to 3,500 in 1910.
The municipal flag of Erquelinnes is white with a red emblem made of two parallelograms and four trapezoids fitting together in a spiral to form an hexagonal "e" letter.

This nearly complete skeleton was discovered in 1882 in a sand quarry at Erquelinnes (Hainault, Belgium).
The bones were unearthed from Late Palaeocene (56 million years) glauconitic sands that were probably deposited in a coastal or shallow sea environment.
The Erquelinnes champsosaur, named Champsosaurus dolloi, was particularly large, up to 2.5 meters long; its long and slender jaws bore numerous small sharp-pointed teeth, reflecting a piscivorous lifestyle.
