Early Life
Geschonneck was born in Bartenstein, Germany (now Bartoszyce, Poland), the son of a poor shoemaker. The family later moved to Berlin in 1909 so that the father could work as a nightwatchman. During the 1920s, he joined Communist Party of Germany, later moving to Poland (then subsequently Latvia and Czechoslovakia) after the rise of Nazism. In 1938, he was arrested in Prague and was deported to several different concentration camps. Geschonneck was evacuated from the concentration camp Neuengamme on the boat Cap Arcona, which was subsequently attacked by the RAF and sunk. He was one of the few prisoners that miraculously survived.
