The Plot

The plot is taking place during the Second World War on one of Greek islands (in the movie not named, in reality "played" by the island of Rhodos. The island is occupied by Germans. There is a small town on the island where Greek resistance movement is very strong and so are the repressions against the population. On the same island there is a POW camp. The commandant of the camp is an antiques-loving Austrian - Major Otto Hecht (Roger Moore). Prisoners (living quite a comfortable life) are doing archaeological job and the commandant is sending more valuable works of art to his sister living in Switzerland. In the meantime Greek resistance movement is getting prepared for the landing of the Allies. The mass escape from the camp (or rather overtaking of the camp) is a part of this plan. Another task is to destroy the missile launching pad (located in a monastery).
