Escuintla (sometimes spelled Esquintla) is a small city in south central Guatemala. It is the capital of the department of Escuintla.


The city of Escuintla is located at 14.30°North, 90.78°West. In 2003 the city had a population of about 68,000 people. It is on the border of the central highlands and the Pacific coastal plain.

The department of Escuintla extends to the Pacific Ocean, has an area of 4,384 km square, and has a population of some 450,000. It is made of the municipalities of Escuintla, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, La Democracia, Siquinalá, Masagua, Tiquisate, La Gomera, Guanagazapa, San José, Iztapa, Palín, San Vicente Pacaya, and Nueva Concepción.
