Erected in 1687, Esh Cross stands on the sight of an earlier medieval structure.
Restored in 1999 by David Edwick, Stonemason and Carver, Hexham, on behalf of Esh Parish Council, with assistance from English Heritage, County Durham Foundation, County Durham Environmental Trust, Durham County Council and Derwentside District Council.
Remnants of the old shaft are to be seen in the adjacent Church of St. Michael and All Angels.

The east of the county between the Ryhope district of Sunderland and Seaton Carew in Hartlepool is the coastline of the North Sea.
Geographically, Durham is roughly bounded by the watershed of the Pennines in the west, the River Tees in the south, the North Sea in the east and the River Tyne / River Derwent in the north.
