Encyclopedia > Eston

Eston is a township, parish and urban district in the North-East of England, historically part of the county of North Yorkshire. The Eston urban district which includes Grangetown, Southbank, Teessville, Normanby and Ormesby is considered a town in its own right and has a strong sense of pride and community within its own district. Eston is part of the Redcar and Cleveland borough but is physically joined to the town of Middlesbrough although it does not lie within that particular borough. It is considered part of Middlesbrough by many residents most of whom still have a strong sense of identity within Eston separate to either borough. During the early 20th century, Eston rejected against an amalgamation into the borough of Middlesbrough and wanted to retain its own strong sense of identity and community pride but it later had to be incorporated into the Town for parliamentary reasons. It was only made part of Langbaurgh-on-Tees (Redcar & Cleveland) in 1974 when county Cleveland was formed. It has a population of approximately 7,500 residents within the town of Eston but around 37,000 in the district.
