The Eternal Sword is a mystical sword that was a gift to Mithos from Origin, the king of all Summon Spirits. It has the power to make the impossible possible, granting whoever wields it infinite power. In part of the story, it is said that the sword itself has the ability to control time and space. However, the sword is very selective on who can wield it. First, one must be acknowledged by Origin, usually by defeating him in combat. However, that alone is not enough, as defeating Origin merely grants you the power to touch the sword without being repelled. The Eternal Sword was made by Origin specifically for Mithos, and only someone who has both Elven and human blood can actually use it. Lloyd Irving eventually found a way around this, and with the help of his Dwarven foster dad Dirk, forged the Ring of the Pact, which allows humans to use the sword. The Sword kept a comet of mana, Derris-Kharlan, hidden and suspended above Sylvarant and Tethe'alla for four thousand years. It is also what allowed Mithos to split the world in two, and was rumored to be the source of his God-like strength. In the end, Mithos lost the Eternal Sword to his former teacher's(aka Kratos) son, Lloyd Irving. This became his undoing, for as he tried to escape the world by leaving on Derris-Kharlan with the Great Seed, Lloyd used the Eternal Sword to reach Mithos' castle and stop him. He also used it to help make the Great Seed germinate. Lloyd then used the Eternal Sword to make Sylvarant and Tethe'alla one again.
Tales of Phantasia Thousands of years later, the Eternal sword was used to put the war between the countries of Odin and Fenrir to an end. After that, the sword was split back into the Vorpal Sword and the Flamberge. Cless Alvein and the "Heroes of Time" acquired these two swords along with the Diamond pact ring. Then they form a pact with Origin and use the sword to prevent Dhaos from traveling in time. They used the sword to strike down Dhaos, and restore peace to the world. The sword was then used to take Klarth and Arche back to their own time, where Klarth sealed it away at his own time. Dhaos is the main villain of the RPG Tales of Phantasia. ...
Flamberge, Vorpal Sword, and the Ring of the Pact The current Eternal Sword is made up of the flame sword Flamberge and the ice sword Vorpal Sword, and only humans can wield it if they are wearing the Ring of the Pact. In Tales of Symphonia, the Ring of the Pact is created by Dirk, Lloyd's foster father, with the materials brought by Kratos, Lloyd's real father. After its creation, Kratos hands over his flame sword Flamberge. Dirk had promised to give Lloyd a special gift when he became a man early in the game. Dirk gave Lloyd the best sword he ever crafted, the Vorpal Sword. Normally, Lloyd wields the two swords separately, which is called Material Blades in this form. Together, these swords would make up the new Eternal Sword. Several thousands of years later, the swords were split back into Flamberge and the Vorpal Sword. Flameberge was hidden in the flame temple of Odin and the Vorpal Sword dwelled within the ice temple of Fenrir. The ring required to make the pact was hidden in the sunken city of Thor. Although Flamberge and the Vorpal Sword can be seen in other games as usable weapons such as Abyss and Legendia, they are not story-related and are often referred to as time links between Tales games. Tales games, however, do not share a timeline, save for Tales of Destiny with Tales of Destiny 2 and Tales of Phantasia vaguely with Tales of Symphonia.
