Ethambutol is indicated in patients with all forms of the pulmonary tuberculosis, in combination with rifampicin and isoniazid.
Ethambutol in adults is used orally in dose 25 mg per kg body weight, once per 24 h during the first two months of the treatment, followed by 15 mg per kg body weight/24 h, combined with isoniazid and rifampicin.

Ethambutol diffuses into actively growing mycobacterium cells where it appears to inhibit their growth by preventing the synthesis of vital metabolites, thus causing impairment of cell metabolism arrest of multiplication and cell death.
Approximately 80% of an oral dose of ethambutol is absorbed from the gasto-intestinal tract, and the remainder is excreted unchanged in the faeces.
Ethambutol may produce optic neuritis which decreases visual acuity and which appears to be related to dose and duration of treatment.
