History Ettlingen was an important crossroads during Roman times, this is demonstrated by the many artifacts found in the area as well as the Neptunstein which commemorates a flood of the Rhine in Latin. The city is first documented in 788 as "Ediningom" in an announcement of the Monastery in Wissembourg in Alsace. In 965, the village of Ettlingen (Ediningom) received market rights (Marktrecht) from Emperor Otto the Great. In 1192, Ettlingen was raised to city status in the German Empire by Heinrich VI one of Friederich Barabarossa's sons. The Margrave Hermann V of Baden became Ettlingen's feudal lord in 1219.
