Eurisko (Gr., I discover) is a program written by Doug Lenat at MIT in 1978. A sequal to Automated Mathematician, it consists of heuristics, i.e. rules of thumb, including heuristics describing how to use and change its heuristics. It was applied to a number of domains with surprising success. See Chapter 5 of Eric Drexler's Engines of Creation for more about Eurisko. Douglas B. Lenat is the CEO of Cycorp, Inc. ... Kenneth W. Haase, Jr. Discovery Systems. Describes Cyrano, a thoughtful reimplementation of Eurisko.
Euriskos fleet was so obviously superior to those of its human opponents that most of them surrendered after the first few minutes of battle; one resigned without firing a shot.
But, as Eurisko played, an increasing number of the slots were filled with the name of the heuristic that had been used to synthesize them.
Eurisko, however, had judged that defense was more important than offense, that many cheap, invulnerable ships would outlast fleets consisting of a few high-priced, sophisticated vessels.
Eurisko, which was established in 1972 by Gabriele Calvi, operates in the social and marketing research sector where, in terms of experience, size and turnover, it is one of Italy's foremost organizations.
Eurisko is headquartered in Milan, it also has offices in Rome and it operates abroad through the NOP World network of which it is a member.
Eurisko was one of the founding members of ASSIRM (the Italian association of market, social and opinion research institutes).
