CEN prepares EuropeanStandards (ENs) and standardization documents in all standardization fields except in the electrotechnical and telecommunication fields.
CEN's work is based on openness and transparency (all national bodies must ensure balanced representation in their delegations of the opinions of all interested parties), consensus (agreements between the interested parties), national representation (as a rule, EuropeanStandards are adopted by a majority of the votes cast by the national members).
The national standards bodies of the Union, EFTA and some Eastern and Central European countries are the National Members of CEN.
Its twenty nine national members work together to develop voluntary europeanstandards (ENs) in various sectors to build a European internal market for goods and services and to position Europe in the global economy.
The standardization bodies of the twenty nine national members represent the twenty five member states of the European Union, three countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and countries who are likely to join the EU or EFTA in the future.
CEN is contributing to the objectives of the European Union and European Economic Area with voluntary technical standards (ENstandards) which promote free trade, the safety of workers and consumers, interoperability of networks, environmental protection, exploitation of research and development programmes, and public procurement.
