The aim of this European Year will be to raise awareness of the positive contribution that can be made by anyone to society as a whole, regardless of their gender, race or ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, disability, age or sexual orientation.
The budget earmarked for the European Year in 2007 for the period from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2007 is 13.6 million euros.
Participation in the Year is open to the Member States, EFTA/EEA countries, candidate countries benefiting from a pre-accession strategy, Western Balkan countries in accordance with the arrangements laid down in their respective agreements, and countries covered by the Neighbourhood Policy, in accordance with these countries' action plans.
2007 to be "European Year of Equal Opportunities for All" (466 words)
The European Year is the centrepiece of a framework strategy designed to ensure that discrimination is effectively tackled, diversity is celebrated and equal opportunities for all are promoted.
The framework strategy on non-discrimination and equal opportunities for all, which accompanies the draft Decision to set up the European Year, aims to ensure that EC anti-discrimination legislation is fully implemented and enforced.
The framework strategy and the European Year follow on from a wide public consultation conducted in 2004 on the basis of the Commission's Green Paper Equality and non-discrimination for all in an enlarged EU.
