There seems to be this perception that in order to ‘get the most out of highschool,’ you have to take the most AP classes, when there is actually so much more that can be learned.
Information learned throughout the school years, social habits developed over time and methods of inquiry were utilized and, in some cases, put to the test by this independent project.
The 1997 - 98 school year was spent researching similar programs in other schools, discussing and debating the various merits of these programs and eventually writing a curriculum proposal that we believed would work for the ETHS community.
Current highschool start times deprive adolescents of sleep and force students to perform academically in the early morning, a time of day when they are at their worst, according to a study in the June issue of the journal Pediatrics.
Results from highschool senior sleep/wake diaries kept for the study also showed that adolescents lost as much as two hours of sleep per night during the school week, but weekend sleep times during the school year were similar to those in summer.
The study was a collaborative project involving researchers at the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology at Northwestern University and faculty, students and parents from EvanstonTownshipHighSchool, Evanston, Ill. The students were advanced placement biology students who helped conduct the study and analyze the collected data.
