Evaton is a township north of Sebokeng in the Emfuleni region of Gauteng, South Africa. It was established in 1904. Like other townships in the area, Evaton was affected by the violent unrest which erupted in 1984 and by 1985 a state of emergency was imposed. In South Africa, the term township usually refers to the (often underdeveloped) urban residential areas that, under Apartheid, were reserved for non-whites (Africans, Coloureds and Indians) who lived near or worked in areas that were designated white-only. Evaton was also home to the world renowned Wilberforce Teacher Training Institute, which was established by the United States-based African Methodist Episcopal Church in the early 1900s.
This assault on Evaton became particularly intense during the historic bus-boycott of the mid-1950s, commonly referred to as 'Azikhwelwa'.
