Evelyn Thomas (b. August 22, 1953) is a Disco/Hi-NRG/House music/Soul music and Dance-pop singer from Chicago, Illinois. Thomas is known for her unusual singing voice as the tone of her voice often hid her ethnicity since she seems to prefer singing in a plan voice rather than the affected soul vocals ethnic females are known for. She sound more like a White female singer than a Black female singer. She is best known for her song "High Energy", which hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1984. The song was also her only Billboard Hot 100 entry, peaking at #85. She has had three additional songs hit the Billboard dance chart. Image File history File links EvelynStanding. ... "High Energy" also reached #5 on the UK Pop charts in 1984 and #1 in Germany, in addition to becoming a major mainstream chart hit all over Europe. The follow-up single "Masquerade", released the same year, received heavy rotation in European clubs but failed to crossover to the UK Top 40. Several of unsuccessful singles followed before she hit the charts again. Most notably "Heartless" and a cover of the Supremes' "Reflections" recorded in a Hi-NRG style which peaked at #18 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play in 1986.
