"Even Better Than the Real Thing", released in 1992, was the fourth single from U2's by-then successful album Achtung Baby. A semi-paean to glam rock (in particular Marc Bolan), the single was moderately successful, although in peaking at No. 12 it became the one of the few U2 singles that failed to reach the top 10 in the UK Singles Chart. A few months after its initial release, however, DJ Paul Oakenfold took the track to his studio, remixing it as a dance record known as the "Perfecto Mix", which charted better than the original, reaching No. 8. Even Better than the Real Thing - A Tribute to U2 - a Review of The Phantom Tollbooth (829 words)
Be that as it may, though, Even Better than the Real Thing - A Tribute to U2, the collaborative work of a consortium of six LA area indie labels whose artists contributed tracks to the release, offers plenty for listeners to take a shine to.
Even ostensible send-ups like Lance Angelus' lounge version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and Danny Dean and the Homewreckers' bouncing surf/swing take on "Two Hearts Beat as One" seem likely to draw knowing grins from the members U2 themselves, who spent a good portion of the '90s lampooning their own star status.
While Real Thing may not, in the most literal sense, live up to its title as stated, it nevertheless stands as a much better than average tribute that mirrors the copious talent, and captures the gloriously abandoned spirit, of the band that it acknowledges.
