Evgeny Abramovich Baratynsky (Russian: Евгений Абрамович Баратынский, March 2, 1800 — July 11, 1844) was lauded by Alexander Pushkin as the finest Russian elegiac poet.
Baratynsky's family life seemed to be happy, but a profound melancholy remained the background of his mind and of his poetry.
Baratynsky's style is classical and dwells on the models of the previous century.

Despite the Emperor's former decree, Baratynsky, now a known poet, is promoted to officer (albeit non-commissioned) and is immediately transferred to Finland.
After retiring from the army, Baratynsky marries Nastasya Lvovna Engelhardt, a devoted, intelligent woman who contributed significantly to her husband's writing, serving as both critic and editor throughout his career (see right).
Baratynsky travels throughout Western Europe, where he spends time in the Paris literary circles and enjoys considerable success in the Russian emigre community there.
