Evrotasriver used to form vast deltaic floodplains and coastal alluvial depositions now largely reduced.
Evrotas Delta is also important for birds (242 bird species recorded, 66 included in Annex I). It also hosts important reptile and mammal species and is also one of the prime nesting areas of Sea Turtle in Greece.
In Evrotas it was only in 1995 and 1996 when thorough research was made realising that, despite severely degraded, Evrotas Delta was still very important for avifauna.
