Exaggeration is the process of making something larger than what it is, or claiming that it is larger than it is. Done unintentionally or as a figure of speech, it is called "hyperbole". Look up hyperbole in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. ...


An example of exaggeration would be if a dozen members of an audience of 100 people walked out on a comedian whose act was going badly, but a news account described it as "the majority of the audience members got up and left". [1] The reason this would be an exaggeration is because "the majority" literally means "50 percent or more" so 12 percent is less than the majority.

Vertical exaggeration is often used if you want to discern subtle topographic features or if the profile covers a large horizontal distance (miles) relative to the relief (feet).
To determine the amount of vertical exaggeration used to construct a profile, simply divide the real-world units on the horizontal axis by the real-world units on the vertical axis.
