Encyclopedia > Exchange District

The Exchange District is a National Historic Site in the downtown area of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is roughly twenty city blocks composed of approximately 150 heritage buildings. The district defines Winnipeg's role as a centre of grain and wholesale trade, finance and manufacturing. Buildings from two periods (1880-1900) and (1900 and 1913) show Winnipeg when it was the gateway to the west and later when it was the region's metropolis. Downtown Winnipeg is centered around Portage Avenue and Main Street, and is widely spread out in between Broadway, Memorial Blvd. ...
