Encyclopedia > Execution unit

In computer engineering, an execution unit is a part of a CPU that performs the operations and calculations called for by the program. It often has its own control unit, registers, and other electronics, such as an arithmetic and logic unit or floating point unit, or some smaller, more specific component. Computer engineering (also sometimes called Computer systems engineering) is a specialised discipline that combines electrical engineering and computer science. ... The central processing unit (CPU) is the part of a computer that interprets and carries out the instructions contained in the software. ... A computer program (often simply called a program) is an example of computer software that prescribes the actions (computations) that are to be carried out by a computer. ... A control unit is the part of a CPU or other device that directs its operation. ... In computer architecture, a processor register is a small amount of very fast computer memory used to speed the execution of computer programs by providing quick access to commonly used values—typically, the values being in the midst of a calculation at a given point in time. ... ALU redirects here. ... A floating point unit (FPU) is a part of a CPU specially designed to carry out operations on floating point numbers. ...

It is commonplace for modern CPUs to have multiple parallel execution units, referred to as scalar or superscalar design. The simplest arrangement is to use one, the bus manager, to manage the memory interface, and the others to perform calculations. Additionally, modern CPUs execution units are usually pipelined. A superscalar CPU architecture implements a form of parallelism on a single chip, thereby allowing the system as a whole to run much faster than it would otherwise be able to at a given clock speed. ...

Hybrid execution unit for complex microprocessor - Patent 5574942 (9044 words)
The hybrid execution unit of claim 1 wherein said control block in response to said single cycle instruction generates control signals to drive said data path to generate result data comprising a predetermined portion of said first source operand concatenated with a predetermined portion of said second source operand.
The hybrid execution unit includes the necessary control logic for directing the data path to perform the various data manipulations or swizzling that are described with respect to the implemented instructions.
The control logic of the hybrid execution unit would then have to decode the incoming opcode which is provided to all the execution units and write the necessary information on the correct bits of the output busses simultaneously with the other execution unit writing back the result data on the remaining output bus bits.
