It follows a largely similar pattern to most European carriers' programs, and forms part of the network of frequent flyer programs in the oneworld alliance (of which BA was a founding member). It has four levels, or tiers of membership: Blue, Silver, Gold & Premier. Membership of the Blue tier is open to anyone over the age of 18 who has flown a 'qualifying flight' in specific airline ticket classes in the past three months. Membership of Premier is only available by invitation of the BA Board of Directors. Members collect tier points (sometimes incorrectly referred to as Air Miles) that allow them to move into higher membership tiers. To complicate the issue, these do not reward members with free flights. For that, the carrier also offers BA Miles, which are held against an Executive Club account, but which do not count towards membership tier increases. Unless the member is a business traveller who flies with BA on a regular basis in Business Class (known on BA as Club World for intercontinental flights, Club Europe for European flights and Business UK for UK domestic flights) or First Class (known on BA simply as FIRST), it is extremely difficult to earn a significant number of points, which makes Executive Club one of the most difficult frequent flyer programs in the world to move into the higher tiers of. Almost 40 domestic flights in a year are needed to get Gold. Blue – Entry 20 Silver – Entry/Renewal 600 Gold – Entry/Renewal 1500 Premier - Entry/Renewal Estimated to be £1m a year in business with British Airways Executive Club points also differ from other frequent flyer programs in that the points are often extremely difficult to redeem - BA releases a limited number of seats which can be booked using air miles around 360 days ahead of the date of travel, which has the result that popular routes (to the US, Asia, Australia and the Middle East) are book up for air miles redemptions 12 months in advance. The only solution is to book as soon as seats are released, and then arrange your holidays around BA! Yet if you are based in the UK, it is very difficult to gain elite status on any other air miles programme. |
