Prior to 1898, Exhibition Street was known as Stephen Street. However after the Melbourne International Exhibition and Melbourne Centennial Exhibition were held at the Royal Exhibition Building in 1880 and 1888 respectively, the street was renamed. The name was officially changed by the Melbourne City Council on 5 December 1898. The change only applied to the portion of Stephen Street north of Collins Street.
