The expressways (高速道路, kōsokudōro, lit. 'high-speed road') of Japan make up a large network of controlled-access toll roads carrying traffic at speeds up to 100 km/h. This network boasts an uninterrupted link between Aomori Prefecture at the nothern part of Honshu and Kagoshima Prefecture at the southern part of Kyushu, linking Shikoku as well. Additional highways serve travellers in Hokkaido and on Okinawa Honto, although those are not connected to the Honshu-Kyushu-Shikoku grid. The vast majority of expressways in either sense are built by state or provincial governments, or by private companies which then operate them as toll roads pursuant to a license from the government.
