Encyclopedia > Eye pattern

In telecommunication, an eye pattern is an oscilloscope display in which a pseudorandom digital data signal from a receiver is repetitively sampled and applied to the vertical input, while the data rate is used to trigger the horizontal sweep. It is so called because, when the signal is in NRZ code, the pattern looks like a series of eyes between a pair of rails. BlackBerry 7100t Telecommunication is the extension of communication over a distance. ... A digital system is one that uses discrete values rather than a continuous spectrum of values: compare analog. ... Signaling, or a signal, may mean: Look up signal in Wiktionary, the free dictionary Scientific concepts In information theory, a signal is a flow of information that can be represented as a mathematical function. ... Information processing In information processing, input is the process of receiving information from an object. ... Contrast with: return-to-zero. ...

Note: System performance information can be derived by analyzing the display. An open eye pattern corresponds to minimal signal distortion. Distortion of the signal waveform due to intersymbol interference and noise appears as closure of the eye pattern. A system is an assemblage of inter-related elements comprising a unified whole. ... Information is a term with many meanings depending on context, but is as a rule closely related to such concepts as meaning, knowledge, instruction, communication, representation, and mental stimulus. ... Waveform quite literally means the shape and form of a signal, such as a wave moving across the surface of water, or the vibration of a plucked string. ... In telecommunication, the term intersymbol interference has the following meanings: 1. ... In science, and especially in physics and telecommunication, noise is fluctuations in and the addition of external factors to the stream of target information (signal) being received at a detector. ...

When the horizontal range is an integer multiple of the period of the input signal a steady display is obtained; at this point of synchronisation the pattern resembles an eye, hence the name.
