The FAI League Cup History and Previous Winners (228 words)
The FAI League Cup is a football competition open to all Football League of Ireland clubs.
For the most part it has been used a precursor to the league season, with 6 groups of 4 teams (geographically based), with the winners and two best runners up going on to the last eight (which started the knockout phase).
In the late 1990s the cup went into a straight knockout format and recently has reverted to again starting with a group phase, this time with 8 groups of 3 with only the winners progressing.
Cork City F.C. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (2346 words)
The Munster Cup was retained but it was the FAI Cup that put Cork City back on the map after several lean and desperate years.
After disappointing domestic cup campaigns, and a drought in league form, a squad meeting was held which resulted in a 12 game unbeaten run for the Rebel Army.
In the League Cup, City faired better than the previous seasons but were knocked out by Longford Town with an injury-time goal in the quarter-finals.
