The FINA World Championships began in Belgrade (YUG) in 1973 and had the participation of 696 athletes from 47 countries.
In 2003, in the 10th FINA World Championships in Barcelona a new record of participation was established: 2015 athletes representing 157 National Federations with 14 World Records and 38 Championship records being established during the 15 day competition.
