The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships are organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). The first world championships in alpine skiing were held in 1931. Until 1939, the event was annual. From 1948-1982, the competition was held every two years. Through the 1980 Winter Olympics, the Olympic champions were also the World Champions (except for the combined event which was returned to the Olympics in 1988). Since 1985, the World Championships have been scheduled in every odd year, independent of the Winter Olympics. Lack of snow in southern Spain in 1995 caused a postponement of the World Championships to the following year.
