Encyclopedia > FOURCC

A FOURCC (literally, four character code) is a sequence of four bytes used to uniquely identify data formats. Originally used in the Amiga IFF file format, the idea was reused to identify data types in Apple's AIFF format and Microsoft's RIFF format. FOURCC codes were also adopted by Microsoft to identify data formats used in DirectX, specifically within DirectShow and DirectX Graphics.
