Fabian Valens of Anagnia (? - 69 CE)

Valens was a roman commander favoured by Nero who, in 69, commanded an army in Germany. When the troops refused to endorse the new emperor Galba, he had them support instead the side of Vitellius. In the war that followed he acquited himself well at first, securing Rome and the senate for Vitellius. However, whilst trying to defend northen Italy against the armies of Vespasian, he was captured, taken to Urvinum and executed there. One anecdote says that he appeared on the music-stage hall at Nero's coming of age celebrations, not at the command of Nero but voluntarily. At the time this was frowned upon, and many people thought that he was merely a man of fashion.
