He was born on June 2, 1980 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to an Italian father and a Brazilian mother.[1] Moretti has a brother. He was raised Christian, but has stated that he is an atheist[citation needed]. He and his family moved to New York City when he was about 2, and as a teenager there he attended the Dwight School with fellow band members Nick Valensi, Julian Casablancas, and Nikolai Fraiture.
