The Fabulous Thunderbirds are a blues-rock band, formed in 1974 (see 1974 in music). After performing for several years in the Austin, Texas blues scene, they finally earned a recording contract with Crysalis Record and were later signed to Arista. The band garnered their big break into the mainstream in 1986 with Tuff Enuff. "Tuff Enuff" was successful single, as was the album's follow-up single, "Wrap It Up".
The Fabulous Thunderbirds' next album, their sixth full-length, Hot Number, fell off the charts quickly and alienated many of the bands' long-time fans due to its slick pop-oriented sound. There followed a long series line-up changes and more obscure, yet much improved, albums throughout the 1990s. Originally featured Stevie Ray Vaughan's older brother Jimmy Vaughan on guitar and as long featured singer and harmonica player, Kim Wilson, as the frontman.
Over the past two years Kleeman and Stannard have shared the stage with many great performers like Maria Muldaur, Chris Smither, Susan Tedeschi, the FabulousThunderbirds, John Hammond, Buddy Guy and the undisputed "King of the Blues," BB King.
On Sunday, Sept. 2 the "afternoon-into-the-evening" line-up of blues singers/guitarists included Shane Henry, The FabulousThunderbirds, Susan Tedeschi and the indomitable B.B. King.
The youngster of the line-up was followed by the popular FabulousThunderbirds, led by founding member Kim Wilson.
Widespread interest in the blues was sparked again in the 1980s with the mainstream success of two Texas blues-rock groups, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble and the FabulousThunderbirds.
Vaughan, a powerful guitarist and vocalist, achieved superstar status before dying in a helicopter crash in 1990.
