Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES) at York University located in Toronto, Canada, is best known for its two-year masters in environmental studies degree (MES). The program is one of most respected degrees of its kind in North America and beyond. Its interdisciplinary pedagogy embraces the built, organizational, spatial, socioeconomic, political and cultural as well as natural environments, bringing together natural and social scientists, activists and scholars, writers and artists. Building on the strengths of the Masters program first introduced in 1968 at a time of rising curiosity and concern about the environment, FES enrolled its first candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 1991, taking a positive step toward its goal to produce graduates who are at the leading edge of environmental studies, linking the Faculty's strengths in teaching and research. In the same year, the Faculty introduced the undergraduate degree, Bachelor in Environmental Studies (BES) for students interested in self-directed learning in an interdisciplinary setting.
