DVDFILE.COM: Jay-Z: Fade to Black Review (529 words)
In Fade to Black, while the vast majority of the music here is ecstatically good, the drive of the filmmakers to dote on the moniker of genius of Sean Carter overwhelms its good-times feel.
The concert itself is excellent, but instead of simply presenting it to us, Fade to Black wants us not to just appreciate it, but almost covet it as the pinnacle of hip-hop in the modern era.
Fade to Black works excellently as a showcase for Jay-Z's inarguable chops, but it falls flat at delivering a thorough, investigatory documentary about a mega-mogul switching careers at the top of his game (Jay-Z is now one of the heads of Def Jam Records).
Lack of context obscures 'Fade to Black' | The San Diego Union-Tribune (601 words)
In the concert documentary "Fade to Black," things get off to a quick boast when a fur-enveloped P-Diddy announces in a backstage interview that rapper Jay-Z's final concert is history-making.
Because "Fade to Black," produced by Shawn Carter, aka – you got it – Jay-Z, is woefully short on context.
Too often, "Fade to Black" feels like a promotional video in support of an album, or personal propaganda setting the stage for Jay-Z's next phase.
