He was a broadcaster and politician, serving in roles including Minister for Health in 1994-1996 and Prime Minister from February 2001. He lost a vote of no confidence in December 2001 and was forced to resign. He was appointed as Governor-General in September 2003 but retired in April 2005 after reaching his 65th birthday. Tuvalu, unlike most countries, has a mandatory retirement age for all civil servants.
