Encyclopedia > Fair trade laws

A fair trade law was a statue that permitted manufacturers the right to specify the minimum retail price of a commodity. They first appeared in 1931 during the great depression in the state of California. They were intended to protect small bussinesses to some degree from the competitions of the very large chain stores during a time when small bussinesses were suffering. Many people objected to this as, if the manufacturers could choose the price, they would have to pay more from the more popular stores. The complexity of the market also made the enforcement of these laws almost impractible. As the chain stores became more popular, and bargain prices more common, there was a wide-spread repeal of the laws in many jurisdictions. In 1975, the laws were repealed completely. trades union - definition of trades union in Encyclopedia (1617 words)
A union (labor union in American English; trade union, sometimes trades union, in British English; either labour union or trade union in Canadian English) is a legal entity consisting of employees or workers having a common interest, such as all the assembly workers for one employer, or all the workers in a particular industry.
Many consider it an issue of fairness that workers be allowed to pool their resources in a special legal entity in a similar way to the pooling of capital resources in the form of corporations.
The legal status of trade unions in the United Kingdom was established by a Royal Commission in 1867, which agreed that the establishment of the organisations was to the advantage of both employers and employees.
