Fairfax is a town located in Franklin County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,765.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 104.9 km˛ (40.5 mi˛). 104.1 km˛ (40.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.77% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,765 people, 1,222 households, and 966 families residing in the town. The population density is 36.2/km˛ (93.7/mi˛). There are 1,249 housing units at an average density of 12.0/km˛ (31.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.74% White, 0.53% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,222 households out of which 44.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.8% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% are non-families. 14.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.20.


In the town the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 38.8% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 5.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 115.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $51,769, and the median income for a family is $55,074. Males have a median income of $34,971 versus $26,362 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,632. 4.8% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.7% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The list of Fairfax grantees was headed by the New York businessman Edward Burling, who was also included in Benning Wentworth's grants for Shelburne, Colchester, Essex, Huntington and Jericho.
Well known throughout the colonies, Fairfax was a close friend of George Washington: it was he who befriended the teenaged Washington by giving him the job of surveying and mapping the Fairfax estates in the Shenandoah Valley.
