Fairfield is a city located in Clay County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 467.


Geography

Fairfield is located at 40°25'55" North, 98°6'18" West (40.432029, -98.104889)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.9 km˛ (0.7 mi˛). 1.9 km˛ (0.7 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. The city is located at 40.43202 N, 98.10324 W.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 467 people, 185 households, and 132 families residing in the city. The population density is 247.0/km˛ (639.1/mi˛). There are 213 housing units at an average density of 112.7/km˛ (291.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 98.29% White, 0.21% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 185 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% are married couples living together, 6.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the city the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $31,477, and the median income for a family is $37,000. Males have a median income of $26,806 versus $19,063 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,815. 15.3% of the population and 12.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.5% of those under the age of 18 and 12.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
