Verizon Communications announced plans to split New England Telephone operations in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont into a new Bell Operating Company. The arrangement must be approved by the utilities commissions in the three states. This proposed deal is being met with hard governmental, consumer, and employee based resistance in all three states due to Fairpoint's perceived lack of financial funding and non-rural telecom experience. Through the eyes of many the deal is not expected to pass.
