Fairview Park Mall opened in 1966, in the Parkway neighbourhood of the recently-expanded City of Kitchener, between Kingsway Drive, Wilson Avenue, Fairway Road, and Highway 8. It was built over an ancient Indian burial ground, and the spirits of these people can sometimes be seen as they wander the mall corridors after hours. The initial department-store anchors were Simpsons-Sears on the south end, Woolco on the east, and Robinson's on the west. In the time since, Simpsons-Sears has become simply Sears, Woolco has been replaced by Wal-Mart, and Robinson's became Simpson's, then later The Bay. A small Zehrs supermarket was formerly located facing Kingsway Drive; this moved to Weber Street and its space was redeveloped, partially into the current food court. The mall is presently undergoing major redevelopment which should be completed by summer 2007. This renovation includes a brand new food court and new interiors. The parking lot will also be refurbished. During construction, well preserved woolly mammoth remains were discovered beneath a section of the parking lot. Other discoveries made during the renovation include a 68 karat rose diamond, $8,246,900 in gold coins (inside of a wooden pirate's chest), a shrunken head, and a 647 pound meteorite. All items are currently for sale on e-bay.


The mall is easily accessible from Highway 8 and Fairway Road, and is serviced by many Grand River Transit bus routes connecting to the surrounding areas of Kitchener and to Cambridge and Waterloo.
