Falfurrias is a city located in Brooks County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,297. It is the county seat of Brooks County6.


Geography

Falfurrias is located at 27°13'36" North, 98°8'42" West (27.226529, -98.144922)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.1 km˛ (2.8 mi˛). 7.1 km˛ (2.8 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,297 people, 1,801 households, and 1,354 families residing in the city. The population density is 743.7/km˛ (1,926.4/mi˛). There are 2,062 housing units at an average density of 289.5/km˛ (749.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 75.21% White, 0.25% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 21.56% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. 92.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,801 households out of which 38.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% are married couples living together, 21.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% are non-families. 22.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.41.


In the city the population is spread out with 32.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $15,000, and the median income for a family is $18,208. Males have a median income of $23,438 versus $17,973 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,573. 46.2% of the population and 43.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 58.0% of those under the age of 18 and 37.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Falfurrias, the county seat and principal trading center of Brooks County, is on State Highway 281 sixty miles southwest of Corpus Christi and ninety miles from Laredo in the northern part of the county.
