Fantoft stave church (Fantoft stavkirke) is a reconstructed stave church in Fana, Bergen. It was originally built in Fortun, a village near inner (the eastern end of) Sognefjord around the year 1150. In the 19th century this church was threatened by demolition as were hundreds of other stave churches in Norway. The church was bought by consul F. Gade and saved by moving it in pieces to Fantoft near (now in) Bergen in 1883. a photo of the Fantoft stave church before it was moved to Bergen On the 6 June 1992 the church was totally destroyed by arson. The fire was initiated by Varg Vikernes according to the judges at his trial, although the jurors voted not guilty. The judges claimed this an error of the jurors but refused to overthrow the whole case. He is as of 2007 serving 12 years out of a 21-year jail sentence (the maximum sentence in Norway is 21 years, but usually reduced down to 12 years) for murder and arson which started in 1993 with the conviction of his murder. However an extra 13 months were added to his sentence due to a form of attempted escape.
