Farnham is a small village located in the Town of Brant, Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 322. The village is named after Leroy Farnham, a local landowner.


The Village of Farnham was incorporated in 1892 and is in the west part of Brant.


Geography

Farnham is located at 42°35'30" North, 79°5'7" West (42.591643, -79.085173)1. Farnham is located in the western part of the Town of Brant, north of the Cattaraugus Reservation.


Farnham is at the junction of Routes 5 and 249.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.1 km˛ (1.2 mi˛). 3.1 km˛ (1.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 322 people, 113 households, and 87 families residing in the village. The population density is 102.7/km˛ (266.7/mi˛). There are 126 housing units at an average density of 40.2/km˛ (104.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 95.03% White, 0.93% African American, 1.24% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. 1.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 113 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% are married couples living together, 15.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0% are non-families. 20.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.28.


In the village the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $35,000, and the median income for a family is $37,000. Males have a median income of $31,000 versus $25,208 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,386. 7.7% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.2% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Farnham begins her study with a lengthy examination of the differences in higher education for the Southern female as compared to her Northern counterpart.
In fact, Farnham further states that in many families, it was looked upon with disgrace if a female had to work because the spouse was viewed as not being able to provide for his wife and the father as not being able to provide for his daughter or family.
Farnham notes the single biggest concern with Southern male colleges was alcohol and the single biggest concern in the female colleges was the male.
