Following the word of the Constitution of Pakistan he held elections for the National Assembly in 1997. The elections were won by the Muslim League and Nawaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister. A thumping majority in the lower house of parliament led the Sharif Government to remove the controversial 8th amendement from the constitution of Pakistan.
