Farrago is the University of Melbourne student newspaper. The editors are elected annually and hold the title of Media Officer in the Melbourne University Student Union (MUSU). Typically the Media Officer position is held by a team of four editors, the maximum team size. A small salary is paid. MUSU is the legal publisher, and formal links are to MUSU, not the academic or administrative establishment of the University. The editorship is highly politicised and election campaigns are vigorous. Farrago is arguably the most prestigious of the Australian student newspapers.
Archives of Farrago are available at the University library. It was first published in 1925.
Ivan Illich writes "a farrago of sub-Marxist cliches, false analogies, non sequiturs, false or bent facts and weird prophesies."
From the moment the story of the Countess of Wessex and the Sheikh of Wapping broke, there has been a farrago of rumour, speculation and fantasy of which virtually every newspaper should be ashamed.
Farrago comes from the Latin farrago, "a mixed fodder for cattle," hence "a medley, a hodgepodge," from far, a sort of grain.
