Their long anticipated first studio album, Based on a True Story was released on May 2nd 2005. Impressively, after only a day of release it had gone gold and was number 1 in the New Zealand album charts with very little advertising or marketing, demonstrating the Drop's low key approach. The album has so far produced one single, "Wandering Eye," which has recieved airplay on music channel C4. It's video depicts the band running a fish and chip shop/night club, the video also features "3 news" anchors John Campbell and Carol Hirschfield, and several other local celebrities (as customers). The single, and word of mouth, has helped keep Based on a True Story high in the charts, remaining in the top 10 albums for much of the year, making it one of the biggest releases of 2005. They dominated the 2005 New Zealand music awards (5th October), taking away all the awards for which they were nominated for. Best Group, Best Album, Best New Zealand Root's Group and the Peoples Choice Award.
