Mir Osman Ali Khan was the last Nizam (or ruler) of the "princely state" of Hyderabad. He ruled Hyderabad, till it was merged with the Republic of India, in 1950. He acceeded as Nizam on the death of his father Mir Mahboob Ali Khan "Nizam VI" in 1911. The state of Hyderabad was the largest(in terms of area)of all princely states in pre-independence India. The state was roughly the size of modern day France. At the time of independence and the creation of a new country (Pakistan) in 1947, the princely states were asked to join either India or Pakistan. The Nizam wished for the state of Hyderabad not to join either and to remain as an independent state. OsmanAli was born in Hyderabad on April 5, 1886 at Purani Haveli in Hyderabad city, the second son of Mir Mahboob AliKhan (Asaf Jah VI), Nizam of Hyderabad, by his first wife Amat-uz-Zahrunnisa Begum.
Their eldest son, Azam Jah, was married to Durru Shehvar, daughter of Abdul Mejid II the last Caliph and Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
OsmanAli donated generously to many worthy institutions in India and abroad: recipients of his largesse included educational institutions such as the Jamia Nizamia, the Darul Uloom Deoband and the Banaras Hindu University.
