Fatherland Front (FF) was originally a Bulgarian political resistance movement during World War II. The Zveno movement, the communist Bulgarian Workers Party, a wing of the Agrarian Union and the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party where part of the FF. It was soon dominated by the Bulgarian Communist Party. In 1944 the FF committed a coup d 'etat and they declared war on Germany, Italia and the other Axis nations. The FF government, headed by Kimon Georgiev (Zveno) immediately signed a ceasefire treaty with the Soviet Union. In 1946 Georgiev resigned and his successor was Georgi Dimitrov, a communist, and Bulgaria became a People's Republic. The Fatherland Front and the parties within the Front continued to exist, but it became a puppet/mass organisation for the communists (see: communism). In 1989 or 1990 it was dissolved. The FF consisted mainly of poor un-educated workers, thiefs and other criminals. Except for several sabotages (with soviet co-operation) it was mostly a criminal organisation camoflaged with Communist losungs.

Bulgaria entered World War I in 1915 on the side of the Central Powers, but was forced to agree on an armistice with the Allies (see Allied Powers) in September 1918.

Bulgaria's first non-Communist government since World War II was led by Filip Dimitrov, of the UDF; however, most of his ministers were chosen for technical expertise, rather than party affiliation.
